Terra Explorer Project
Most naturalists keep track of species that they encounter. Compiling lists of sightings undoubtedly adds enjoyment to such sports as watching birds and butterflies. We also keep lists of sorts. Our focus, however, is on identifying interesting and unique adaptations of plants and animals.
Such an approach has several advantages. Foremost are the personal glimpses into ways that nature works, especially if you take the time to interpret your observations from an evolutionary perspective. Also, access to new observations is greatly expanded as every species exhibits multiple adaptive traits. There are traits, for example, involved with finding food, attracting a mate, avoiding dangers, etc.
Contributors to the online Terra Naturalist journal are happy to share their observations and ideas. In doing so, we hope others will be inspired to explore the natural world on their own. We also offer a second incentive to share. Periodically, we select content from the journal to publish in the Terra Explorer book series. We’ve named this endeavor the Terra Explorer Project (TEP).
